Developing Safe and Friendly Relationships Between Dogs and Cats

Instructors:  Dr. Suzanne Hetts and Dr. Dan Estep, Certified Applied Animal Behaviorists

Statistics show that 41% of dog-owning households also include at least one cat, and that 46% of cat-owning households also include at least one dog. It is important for dog trainers and others working with behavior problems to be able to educate families about the behavioral needs of both species and what to do to promote friendly inter-species relationships that contribute to the well being of their pets.

This two session webinar will compare and contrast the social structures of dogs and cats, how differences often create barriers to communication between the species, and how miscommunications can lead to conflicts.

Attendees will discover rational means of evaluating which relationships are most likely to work and which are not, how to make maximize the success of initial introductions, modifications owners can make in the physical home environment that will aid in avoiding conflicts, and how to recognize warning signs that the safety and wellbeing of either animal could be at risk.

We’ll discuss the most common problems that arise between dogs and cats, and how to resolve them so that both species can live satisfying lives without being subjected to ongoing stress from one another. The instructors – Dr. Dan Estep and Dr. Suzanne Hetts – have helped hundreds of families living with both dogs and cats to create healthy relationships among their pets.
