What Dogs and Cats Really Want: How Stress Affects Behavior

Instructors: Suzanne Hetts, Ph.D., CAAB, and Daniel Estep, Ph.D., CAAB

Stress is a word that is used in all kinds of contexts from dogs that are ‘stressed’ when they can’t get a cookie they want, to dogs that are ‘stressed’ from being in a new training class, to cats that are ‘stressed’ from fighting with other cats in the household.

But what makes an environment or an event stressful environment for an animal?  What accounts for individual differences in stress responses? The answers are important because “one size won’t fit all” when it comes to managing stress and stressors.  The first step in helping stressed animals is recognizing differences in both the stressors and manifestations of stress for different species, breeds and individuals.

And all sorts of behavior problem are attributed to “stress” but what does that really mean? What exactly are stress related behaviors?   Attributing “stress” as a cause of a behavior problem can actually become a “red herring” that prevents us from understanding the real reasons for behavior changes and problems.

We’ll address these issues and more in this two session webinar course. You’ll learn:

What science has to say about stress.  There is an unbelievable amount of scientific literature on this topic, most of which has not trickled down to the pet community.  And when it has, it has often been garbled.  We’ve cherry picked the most important information for you.

  • What the most important stressors are for most dogs and cats and what sorts of training “philosophies” contribute to stress (and they may not be what you’re thinking!)
  • How animals react to stress and what influences the stress response
  • What to look for if you are evaluating the quality of an environment for a given animal
  • Practical stress reduction techniques to improve quality of life based on behavioral needs and the Five Freedoms
  • What the Association of Shelter Veterinarians Guidelines for Standards of Care in Shelters has to say about behavior AND how they apply to pets in private homes
  • A method for prioritizing stress reduction procedures depending on the context in which you’re working
