How to Resolve Housesoiling Problems

Instructors: Daniel Estep, Ph.D., CAAB and Suzanne Hetts, Ph.D., CAAB

Housesoiling behavior is among the most common of problems for dog owners.  At one time or another almost all owners have to deal with it, even if it’s just when housetraining a puppy.  And ongoing soiling is one of the main behavior reasons why dogs lose their homes.

Causes of housesoiling problems can be complex, and it’s not uncommon for these problems to have multiple causes.  What starts out as incomplete housetraining, can be made more difficult by the development of surface and location preferences.  It’s not uncommon for fear to be at the root of a good portion of these problems.  And if your behavior history doesn’t reveal the cause, your behavior modification plans will miss the mark, and dog owners will waste their time with irrelevant training recommendations.  The problem won’t be solved, the dog may not stay in the home and your reputation will suffer.

So you can’t afford to stumble in your analysis and assessment of these problems.

In this webinar course you’ll learn the causes for housesoiling problems, how to use a behavioral history to assess the cause and finally successful strategies for managing and resolving these problems.

We’ll also address the three components of housetraining, for both puppies and adult dogs, and why any housetraining protocol must take into account the normal development of elimination behavior.

This course will show you how to be more successful resolving house soiling problems, and more effective and efficient when helping people train puppies and dogs new to the their homes.

The course includes a reference and reading list AND the chapter on Elimination Problems from Dr. Hetts’ best selling book Pet Behavior Protocols: What To Say, What To Do, When To Refer
