Crates are often recommended to help house train dogs, prevent puppy destructiveness and to prevent or manage a variety of problems in older dogs. In some circles, crates are considered the central tool in the training and management of pet dogs. One rationale for using crates is that dogs are “denning animals”, that is, the ancestors of dogs (wolves) lived in dens, therefore, dogs are comfortable staying in crates for long periods of time. But, is this rationale really based on scientific fact?

And what’s the support for the notion that puppies (or older dogs) won’t soil where they sleep? What does the ethology of dogs tell us? Does the way the average person uses crates with their dogs meet the welfare requirements for housing dogs?

When should crates be used with dogs, and when are they inappropriate? What’s the best way to introduce a dog to a crate? What kinds and sizes of crates are best? Are there alternatives to crates that can serve the same function?

This one session webinar course addresses these questions and MORE and really blasts through myths and misconceptions about crates that create less than ideal lifestyles for dogs.

This class has been approved for 1 hour of CEU credit by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT).

Do you know the basic parts of a good behavioral history?

Do you know what skills are necessary to take a good behavioral history?

Do you know how to direct the behavioral interview in the direction it needs to go?

Taking a behavioral history is a critical and necessary part of working with any client who has a pet with a behavior problem. Until you have a complete behavioral history, you can’t identify what’s causing the problem and you won’t have a good idea about how to resolve the problem.

History taking is a specialized type of interview. You have to know what questions to ask and how to ask them. We’ll give you many examples of good questions and not so good questions that influence the quality and accuracy of information you obtain. There are about as many history forms as there are history takers but we’ll give you examples of several broad types for you to choose from.

We’ll give you ideas about how you to sort out the wheat from the chaff, or be able to recognize what’s important and what’s irrelevant. You’ll learn how you can establish a rapport with your clients and make it clear you are both on the same side. You’ll also learn skills to control the conversation and keep clients on track without offending them or impeding the flow of information.

In addition to lecture, participants will have the opportunity to listen to actual pre-recorded history taking sessions from our consulting appointments, (posted online to be listened to outside of class for discussion in class) submit their own case histories for review and listen to us conduct a "practice" history during the class.

Here’s what previous students had to say about this course:

"The interview lessons are actually transferring to my "real" life. Helps me to ask more specific questions."
Thanks, Karen

"I’m excited about this course. I absolutely loved taking a ˜behavioral history’ and got some fabulous tips that have helped me get out of the interviewing rut I was in. Thanks for doing these courses."

Dealing with dog aggression problems can be frightening to pet parents and difficult for behavior consultants and dog trainers. In recent years, a variety of new therapeutic approaches have arisen as well as variations of older ones. Some of these have been helpful, some have not.

Now you have the opportunity to learn how play can be used to help with aggression problems. Play as therapy for aggression problems? How can that possibly work! Play can have a powerful influence on the emotional states as well as behavior of dogs, but its potential for dealing with behavior problems has been largely overlooked. Dr. Karen London has pioneered the use of play behavior as a component of behavioral therapy for dog aggression problems.

In this two session webinar, Dr. London will use videos, slides, and case studies to explain the basis for play therapy and to show how you can make play a part of the treatment for some aggressive dogs.

Karen is a very popular, nationally known speaker who enlivens her presentations with her unique perspective and sense of humor. You can read more about her HERE.

to cover your you-know-what!

Your written reports can help you establish your credibility if they are well written, easily understandable and include conclusions that can be substantiated. Your reports can also undermine your credibility if they are rambling, mis-represent “facts” that are really speculations, include interpretations that are difficult to justify, and over-step your professional boundaries.

In this 2 session tele-webcast you’ll discover

The purpose of a written report

What should be included in your report, depending on its purpose

What mistakes to avoid when writing your reports

And you’ll have the benefit of hearing different perspectives from your THREE instructors, all of whom are experienced behaviorists, on their individual preferences for how reports are written and used.

You’ll also receive an outline or “template” to get you started with your own reports, a chance to have reports you’ve written critiqued and evaluated (anonymously – author’s name won’t be shared with class) and review samples of reports your instructors have used for years to build their businesses.

Here’s what previous students had to say:

"This was my first one and I will definitely take more. The quality of instruction, the amount of class notes and samples, the scientific foundation, the professional experience, the "push" to bring dog training to a higher level are a combination not easily found elsewhere all for a very affordable price and NO travel :>)"
Gitta V.

"This was the most practically valuable course I have taken and I’m excited to put it to use."

Do you have all the business and all the clients you want? Do you know that more and more people are searching for local businesses using their phones, and that 60% of those users call after finding the business that way? Wouldn’t YOU like to be the business receiving those calls?

In this special webinar session with our friend, colleague and small business marketing coach Ms. Deb Miller, MA,MOQ/OE, you’ll discover WHAT mobile marketing is and WHY it’s important for your business, especially in a slow economy.

Do you know if your website is "mobile friendly"? If prospective clients are looking for you or your business on their smart phones and your site displays in tiny print or users have to scroll left to right to see it, they will probably give up trying to find or contact you.

But for your site to even come up in a search, it must be GPS targeted. Is your site optimized for your location?

Many of you have expressed concerns about client compliance. Do you know how you can use one type of mobile marketing as a method to increase client compliance? Whether you have a physical facility or not, you can use QR codes to encourage people to contact you. Not sure what a QR code is or how to get one? Then that settles it – this webinar is for YOU!

Here’s what a few people who attended LIVE had to say:

"Great information, logically presented in a friendly, encouraging way.
So many wonderful suggestions were presented!" Lola C.

"You can start today!!! (Even those who don’t have a smart phone can use text messages starting today!!
Others should at least get a QR code today!" Kelly M.

Take this class ON DEMAND now! The ON DEMAND class is a recorded webinar with the full content of the live class. After you register, you will have 7 days online access to this one session class.

Instructor: Ms. Kathy Sdao, M.A., ACAAB

Facilitated by Suzanne Hetts, Ph.D., CAAB and Dan Estep, Ph.D., CAAB

Few topics evoke as much controversy and emotion as dog bites and aggression. Professionals often hear from owners comments that include:

“I never thought he’d actually bite!”
“He just seemed to bite for no reason.”
“It just came out of the blue, the bite was totally unexpected.”

From the professional’s side, a dog’s aggressive behavior often doesn’t seem to fit nicely into any of the traditional categories such as territorial, possessive, protective, or dominance aggression. So it can be difficult sometimes to give owners a “why” for their dog’s behavior that they can understand, and that makes rational sense.

Enter an alternative way of conceptualizing the “why” of biting behavior based on additive risk factors and bite thresholds. In this enlightening course, Kathy will present a simple theoretical model of why dogs bite, first described by Jean Donaldson in her classic book "The Culture Clash.” You’ll discover how to use the additive model not only to understand aggressive incidents but also how to use it as a basis for planning and explaining remedial behavior-modification protocols.

In this one session course you’ll learn:

How the bite-threshold paradigm compares with the more traditional classification approach

Why the concept of behavioral thresholds is an important part of this model

What “triggers” are, and how they differ from other antecedent events

How the bite threshold model can explain “out of the blue” bites and to develop clear and effective behavior-modification strategies

How this model can facilitate discussions with our clients

How this model may help us estimate the likelihood of successful behavioral outcomes

Instructors: Dr. Dan Estep, and Dr. Suzanne Hetts

To avoid confusion, we recommend reading ALL the information on this page

Do you know the difference between punishment and negative reinforcement? Do you know what they have in common?

Can you identify when negative punishment is being used in a training situation and when it isn’t? For example, is a “time out” always negative punishment?

Are you using “aversive” techniques and don’t know it? And is that’s necessarily a “bad” thing?

What about the hot-button of positive punishment? Discover decision making techniques for if, and when, it’s appropriate to use this behavioral consequence and which claims about its use are true, and which are not.

If you want the answers to these questions and MORE, this course is for you!

This course will cover the four quadrants of operant conditioning (positive and negative reinforcement and positive and negative punishment), including how to offer and withhold rewards effectively, and the criteria for proper use of punishment (both positive and negative).

New information includes breed and sex differences in learning abilities, the salience of visual vs. auditory cues, the distinction between positive and negative reinforcement and the negative effects of positive reinforcement – that’s right we said the negative effects of R+!

If you’ve gotten confused by the way others have presented the subject or if you aren’t sure how to apply what you know in your daily work or with your own dog, this course is for you. This course is a must for all pet professionals. Anyone who trains dogs, needs to modify their behavior for any reason or needs to help dog owners do so must understand not only the fundamentals of learning but also the details of implementation. By knowing how to manage the consequences of behavior, you can make learning fun, efficient, and effective for both people and dogs.

This is a great course for trainers preparing for CCPDT certification, veterinary technicians preparing for AVBT certification, or any pet professional who wants to expand his/her knowledge about how animals learn. CEUs from CCPDT and IAABC are pending.

Click here to view the course outline. The course comes with class notes and recommended readings.

Course dates: This course is now available On Demand

. CEUs can be earned through listening to the replays and then correctly emailing us answers to “test” questions given during the class.
