Canine Aggression to Non-Family Members

Instructors:  Suzanne Hetts, Ph.D., CAAB, CVJ and Daniel Estep, Ph.D., CAAB

No other canine behavior problem causes so much concern or attracts so much public attention as aggression to people. Communities struggle with how to keep people safe and at the same time allow dog owners to have their pets. Lawsuits are often brought by people injured by dogs and people with aggressive dogs want and need help to make their dogs safer.

  • Do you know the major reason dogs become aggressive to strangers? (It may not be what you think!)
  • Do you know what strategies work best for managing and resolving aggression problems?

This two-session webinar will examine the causes for aggression to non-family members and how to identify them. It will also address the evaluation of risk of keeping an aggressive dog as well as treatments for the problem including “growl classes.”

This class will be valuable for any animal professional who deals with potentially aggressive animals including veterinarians, veterinary technicians and other veterinary staff members, dog trainers, behavior consultants, shelter and rescue workers, groomers, pet sitters, pet day care providers and boarding facility workers. Whether or not you work with aggression problems in your business this course will be valuable in helping you understand the nature of aggressive dogs and how to be safe around aggressive dogs.
